UPDATE: The ordnance was determined to be an old training round. It is inert and poses no threat, therefore Rt. 11 has been reopened. The 167th Airlift Wing in Martinsburg currently has their main gate and portions of Route 11 closed near the entrance to the installation. This is out of an abundance of caution for an outdated, unexploded military ordnance that was brought to the installation. A local resident found the unexploded ordnance while cleaning a basement. An Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit from Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, is en route to respond and clear the area. The road and gate closure could last for numerous hours as crews work to clear the area. A voluntary evacuation is in effect for residents living in the vicinity of the base's main gate. The 167th Security Forces Squadron is coordinating with various local authorities on the response. For questions or concerns, please call the Public Affairs Office at 304-616-5251.
We were honored to have nearly 50 local employers here at our wing yesterday for the West Virginia Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) military “Bosslift” event. The participants spent the day learning about the West Virginia Air National Guard and 167th Airlift Wing missions. They toured our base facilities and took part in a local training flight on board a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. The ESGR, created in 1972, works to promote cooperation between Guardsmen and Reservists and their civilian employers. The ESGR offers ombudsmen services and educates service members and employers on USERRA, the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act, which establishes rights and responsibilities for service members and their civilian employers.

Yesterday we hosted eighty-eight JROTC cadets from Berkeley County, W.Va., and the Northern Virginia area. The cadets, who were participating in the week-long Shenandoah Valley Cadet Officer Leadership School at Shepherd University, toured our air control tower, flight simulator, fire department and a C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. Even with temperatures in the nineties and high humidity, the cadets marched to each location, calling jodies as they went.
Harry S. Truman said, “Not all readers are leaders but all leaders are readers.” The leader of the West Virginia Air National Guard, Brig. Gen. Christopher Walker, shares his recommended reading list here.

Memorial Day is the one day each year set aside to remember those who Abraham Lincoln observed gave “the last, full measure of devotion.” We’re here today because of them. This Memorial Day, as we spend time with family and friends, please reflect upon the legacy left to us by all the brave men and women of our nation’s Armed Forces. By honoring our fallen warriors – we honor their legacy of ensuring democracy, freedom, equality, and lasting peace prevails.

Today we left our uniforms on the hangers and wore our jeans instead, here at the 167th Airlift Wing. Honoring Denim Day and Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we stand in support of sexual assault survivors. Our force support squadron took it one step further, wearing superhero shirts, to show their fight against sexual violence. Denim Day began after a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court in which a rape conviction was overturned because the justices blamed the victim for wearing tight jeans.
